-
How to address these
challenges without disrupting the business?
Ten Major Issues facing conventional Management Systems
The
Goldcert approach is based on a recognition of significant issues facing
conventional quality systems:
1.
Quality should not exist
in isolation from the business needs of the organization, yet in most
companies real business and the quality system occupy parallel
universes.
2.
Most quality systems are
overly concerned with maintaining compliance with documented procedures
and pay little attention to the equally important challenge of planning,
implementing and stabilising changes in the day-to-day operations of the
business. Indeed many quality systems seem to run after the changes rather
than lead them.
3.
A collection of quality
components (such as Document Control, Internal Audits, Corrective Actions
etc) does not of itself constitute an effective system
4.
Most quality documentation
reflects what should happen on a good day despite the fact that most
quality problems arise from what happens on a bad day.
5.
Internal Audits are
notorious for generating findings of little or no interest to senior
management (ie of little or no relevance to the business needs of the
organization).
6.
Corrective Action systems, by
definition, focus on reactive issues and fail to address the fact that pro
active excursions can also undermine the integrity of the quality system and
of the business.
7.
The majority of quality
systems are either paper-based and/or rely on general-purpose software
such as Microsoft Office. These minimalist resources inhibit the
development of truly effective systems capable of serving the distinctive
needs of different user groups and especially the business needs of senior
management.
8.
Many multi-site
organizations are characterized by parallel systems at different locations
with little or no sharing of best practice. This conflicts fundamentally
with the principle of continual improvement.
9.
Senior management teams
often regard quality systems as a necessary evil, essential to achieve and
retain the coveted certificate on the wall but of limited value beyond
that. The gulf between management and quality can often be expressed as
"Management initiates change and quality cleans up the mess".
10. Very few quality systems set a target to improve the quality of
the working environment for the staff. Fewer still succeed.
